Are funny ads worth the money? What makes ads memorable, and why

Every year about this time, we start thinking about an exciting television event: the Super Bowl. I'm excited because it's the biggest football game of the year. The rest of the family just likes to watch the commercials. No doubt, some of those commercials are hilarious, and there's often more conversation about the commercials than the game itself. Companies spend millions buying advertising time, and millions more developing commercials that will stand out from the pack on Super Bowl Sunday. Other than watching your favorite team lose, there's nothing more disappointing than seeing an old commercial during the game.
But don't you sometimes wonder whether advertisers actually get their money's worth? Do people really remember the product being advertised? Or do they just remember that guy getting hit in the crotch repeatedly with dense, spherical objects?
Surprisingly, there actually hasn't been much research on the effectiveness of humor in ads. Instead, most research has focused on expectancy: if something in an ad is unexpected, it's more likely to be remembered than something we expect. Even more importantly for advertisers, the unexpected event in the ad must be directly related to their product. Here's an ad that does a pretty good job of that:
In this ad, the unexpected event is the unveiling of the product itself. But many advertisers don't offer quite such a direct connection between the humor and the product being advertised:

Are surveys art?

In honor of President's Day in the U.S., I bring you this work of "art," generated on the basis of a survey of 1,001 Americans' preferences about art:
The work was created to embody the survey responses. The respondents were asked questions like "what is your favorite color" and "would you prefer paintings of outdoor scenes or indoor scenes." The artists, Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid, then tried to paint as many as possible of the survey responses into the scene.
Thus, blue dominates in this painting of an outdoor landscape. There are wild animals (as opposed to pets), and a family group (rather than an individual). George Washington is present because people said if famous people were depicted, the preference would be for historical figures rather than contemporaries.
The same survey was repeated around the world. Interestingly, the results were nearly the same almost everywhere. You can see the full set of paintings here.

Drept urmare, lansez urmatorul apel:
Colegiul Medicilor sa initieze o campanie de imagine in care sa se reliefeze cate vieti au fost salvate prin cele 300 si ceva de milioane de euro primiti spaga anul trecut in sistemul medical plus toate celelalte avantaje de care beneficiaza pacientii dupa plata atentiei. Analiza trebuie sa sublinieze si beneficiile evolutive ale practicii spagii prin care doar cei mai adaptati - (instariti si/ sau nesimtiti) - isi perpetueaza genomul tarat. Sa nu uitam ca persoanele sanatoase nu au asemenea probleme.
Sa nu se treaca cu vederea nici nevoile extraordinare ale studentilor medicinisti si ale medicilor (masini tari, excursii in strainatate, case cat mai confortabile, petreceri de lux, Breitling, Henessy s.a.) a caror acoperire este necesara pentru diminuarea stressului profesional. Medicii trebuie si ei sa dea atentii, sa nu uitam - tot felul de autorizatii, protectii, parafe, plus darile obisnuite la politie, in justitie etc. care nu pot fi ignorate. Statul le taxeaza oricum veniturile legale, facandu-se ca uita ca ei nu vand servicii pur si simplu ci pot decide cine traieste si cine moare.
Sa se admita faptul ca cei cativa nesimtiti care refuza cadourile sau plicurile de la pacienti, lansand in mod pervers o intelegere deformata a onestitatii in practicarea medicinei, trebuie sa fie deconspirati ca beneficiari ai altor privilegii sau pur si simplu agenti ai unor interese care vor destabilizarea sistemului nostru social. In plus, sa fie identificate persoanele care, prin opiniile lor contrare asa-zisei coruptii din sistemul medical romanesc - au afectat in mod negativ imaginea breslei, sa fie puse pe o lista neagra a celor cu care medicii din toata tara pot face practica medicala, experimente sau simple farse.
In final, solicit Ministerului de Externe sa formuleze un punct de vedere oficial in care sa apere mandria poporului nostru denigrat fara rusine de mass media occidentala.
